Tombstone Tuesday: Frans van Dyk
The grave of Frans van Dyk (or Dijk). A war grave: Van Dyk played a role in the resistance movement and was executed during the second world war.
On the top of the stone we see the years '40-'45. This refers to the war years: 1940-1945. Yes, I know the war started in 1939, but for us Dutch the war started on 10 May 1940, when German troops crossed the Dutch border.
The text on the tomb stone:
| Hier rust onze commandant | Here rests our commander |
| Frans van Dyk | Frans van Dyk |
| Geboren 10 december 1904 | Born 10 December 1904 |
| Gefusilleerd te Utrecht 8 maart 1945 | Executed by firing squad 8 March 1945 |
| De verzetsgroep en N.B.S. afd. Doorn | The resistance group and N.B.S. [Dutch resistance movement] Doorn charter |
On the site of the Dutch war grave foundation I saw that Van Dyk's full name was Frans Nicolaas van Dijk. His birth and death dates are as listed on the stone.
