A roadside monument

On the old road from Jutphaas to Utrecht, not far from the Catholic church and church yard that we visited last month, there is a small roadside monument.

The text on the monument (translated in English):

Thanks friend
Remco
15 July 1983
28 March 2008
Bye "Whistler"

This newspaper article (in Dutch) tells that a 24 year old man from Nieuwegein died here after his car somehow got into the canal. How the accident happened was unknown at the time of writing (28 March).

Apparently friends of the victim erected this monument on the spot where the accident happened. It is well maintained, with fresh flowers.
